some comments on orthologues in zebrafish

There is only one form of capZ in the worm made up of an alpha (cap-1) and beta subunit (cap-2). In vertebrates like zebrafish and mammals there are up to 3 different subunits which may or may not dimerise in multiple combinations and have distinct roles in the cell. This has not really been explored at all and research so far has focused mainly on how capZ is involved in regulating actin dynamics. The zebrafish schnecke mutant is specific because it appears to be hypomorphic, has a muscle specific phenotype and only affects one subunit of this complex. Complete knockdown of the alpha 1 subunit gives a much more severe phenotype and there are neural defects but real mutants are required to completely verify this phenotype. -- from Annabelle Scott's PhD thesis
