Biology

Pristionchus pacificus is a self-fertilising hermaphrodite nematode of the Diplogastridae family. One of the main differences to C.elegans are the pre-hatching embryonic molt stages. Also of note is the dimorphism of stoma structures in Pristionchus pacificus. The lifecycle is 4-days at 20 degrees Celcius.

Ecology

Closely related species Pristionchus maupasi and Pristionchus entomorphus naturally occur in close association with Scarabaeidae and Chrysomelidae. Pristionchus pacificus was so far not observed in isolates from North American scarab or potato beetles, but was found on Japanese scarab beetle Exomala orientalis (WBPaper00031139). The laboratory strain PS312 used for the genome sequencing was isolated in Pasadena (California) and is available at the CGC strain collection.
